You Are Your Thoughts

You Are Your Thoughts

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Paul wrote the letter of Philippians while he was in prison and it sounds like practically his happiest letter to the churches of old. This verse of scripture is one of the reasons and I think we all need this in this day and age where bad news is readily available for us to get. We don’t have to search for them, they come to us. So we are tempted to think we are obliged to dwell and think on this bad and terrible things that happen to us or around us everyday. The truth is we do not have to, we should rather focus on the good around us because we need to live at peace.

Thinking on only positive things may sound like you’re being asked to ignore the negative things around you but that’s not true, we can be aware of the ills that happen near us and still live and think positively. Paul was in prison fully aware that he could be put to death at any time and he sounded as happy as anyone because instead of thinking on the hardship he was going through he was happy he could at least still preach the gospel to people around him both in prison and in other cities around him via letters.

I admonish you today to tone down on the kind of news you listen to, you do not need to know all the tragedies that happen as they do, it does not add anything to your life instead it takes from you. The TV stations and blogs that report all these tragedies could also report on the wonderful things happening around but they won’t because they know bad news sells more than good news. That is why today I want to remind you that for every death reported there are many more news of life saved and live birthed at that same moment not reported, for every divorce reported there are millions of good and great marriages not spoken about, for every bad rumour blogged or reported by the media about someone remember that the person has a lot of great things going on in their life other than that one negative they choose to sell to you, don’t judge someone off one negative news reported about them (celebrity or not) and finally for every news on bad guys or ladies out there there are many more good guys and ladies out there not spoken about, so choose which one you will dwell on.

It is not your job to control what the media project but it is your job to determine if it is worth your time in anyway because your joy and peace of mind is very important.

While I focused on news and media as a source of bad and unprofitable thoughts we dwell on daily, I am not oblivious to the fact that we have other sources. So please evaluate your life and check the places that supply bad news to you daily and make a conscious effort to reduce their effect on your thought process. It’s important we do this because the bible says “as a man thinketh in his heart so is he (Prov 23:7)” this means eventually we become our thoughts and we also attract our thoughts, and if that’s the case we need to make sure our thoughts are set on things of virtue and good reports.

Being sad, gloomy or negative is a decision fueled by information – Jide

What I mean by this quote is you can be sad and you get a call or a credit alert and immediately you forget why you were sad in the first place. You forgot simply because you received some good information, therefore whatever made you sad was as a result of a bad news or information you received. You can always choose what info you allow affect your thoughts and emotions.

Do you have any constant source of negativity apart from news from all sources(Tv, Radio, Blogs, Social Media)? Please share them below in the comment section let’s talk about how we can change and control their effects in our lives. You can also drop a comment for others to learn what to do with the bad thoughts they receive, what i do is remind myself about the good around me. What do you do?

Thought of the week: You do not have to know everything that happens in the world around you especially the negatives.
